Monday, January 10th, 2011

There are videos on YouTube on just about every topic that you can imagine. Some are complete wastes of time while others actually have valuable information to share. Here are 5 YouTube videos every x-ray tech should watch.

5 Steps To Chest X-Ray Interpretation

This video is a fantastic guide to chest x-ray interpretation. It begins by providing you with the 5 steps which is exactly what you would expect it to do. Then it provides you with sample x-rays to look at so that you can see how the 5 steps would actually be applied in real cases. The many conditions represented help you to apply these steps and to see exactly what you will be looking for. The narrator is fantastic and does a great job of explaining everything.

1940 X-Ray Physics Documentary By William D. Coolidge

This is one video that you should definitely watch. It is an old black and white documentary that talks about the beginnings of x-rays. It does not really teach you much about x-rays beyond the history of them but rather gives you a better idea of how x-rays were viewed back in the 1940s. This video is a throwback to a time when x-rays were not as well understood and can lead one to wonder if they are completely understood today. When x-rays were first discovered people thought that they were entirely harmless but later learned the truth. It makes you contemplate if they are doing more harm still now than is known.

How Does An X-Ray Tube Work

This video uses an animation to take you through the structure of an x-ray tube as the narrator explains exactly how this tube works. It talks about how the intensity of x-rays is increased and how x-rays are made to travel in the desired direction. This video features a number of images in addition to the x-ray tube animation to help explain the processes at work here. All in all, this is a very successful brief explanation of what is going on in an x-ray tube which is something that every x-ray tech should understand very well.

Radiation Dose – Part 1

This video talks about the important issue of the radiation dosage that people receive and the consequences of this exposure. It talks about how well radiation passes through certain substances and about the potential for such negative repercussions as cellular damage and genetic damage. Clearly, the information continues in Part 2.

Radiation Protection Practices In Medical Imaging

This video talks about the basics of radiation protection practices. It comes from students but this just means that they are explaining everything by the book. It is a great refresher video for any x-ray tech even if it may seem to be a bit simple.

These are 5 YouTube videos that every x-ray tech should watch. They teach you where x-rays began, how they work, and how to work with them as safely as possible. These are good videos but even if you don’t enjoy them then you can still take comfort knowing that it’s YouTube and you could be watching videos that are a lot worse.

T.R. Rheinecker blogs on a variety of topics, with a specific focus on where to find accredited institutions offering an online radiology degree.

So I stayed in my chair

Afterward I realized the only thing I protected was my own dignity. Since then I’ve been haunted by this family. Jim Wallis, editor of Sojourners magazine, says the theme of wealth and poverty is the second most prominent theme in the Bible (after idolatry). He claims that in our country there is a climate of denial about homelessness. “We must change the culture,” he says, because the issues are spiritual, not political. There are different kinds of homelessness, of course. A home is more than just somewhere to sleep, and making a home takes more than money. Some people have several houses but are never at home. Some, even the educated, are homeless by choice and spurn shelters, preferring instead to sleep on a park bench or under a bridge. Documenting the stories, poets on Skid Row in Los Angeles give voice to all the homeless, telling us they are the face of America. Street Roots (see streetroots.org) is dedicated to the idea that the poor provide vital feedback to us all. The paper is devoted to the writings of disenfranchised people on the premise that everyone, despite circumstances, has wisdom and beauty to share.
